Who we are and what these terms cover
SoftLife is a city-life game played with play money. It is operated by SoftLife Interactive Media Limited, a company registered in Nigeria ("SoftLife", "we", "us"). These terms cover the game on the web, the SoftLife apps for iPhone and Android, this website, and support.
These terms include our purchases and refunds policy and our community guidelines. Our privacy policy explains how we handle your personal data. If you got SoftLife from Apple's App Store or Google Play, their terms also apply to the download and to any purchase made through them.
Who can use SoftLife
You must be 18 or over to use SoftLife. By using it you confirm you are. Some features also check the date of birth you give us: buying play money or the Pass, speaking or hosting in audio rooms, and seeing sponsored content for age-restricted products, which only reaches people over the legal drinking age where they live.
SoftLife is offered in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and India. You choose a market when you start; prices, payment methods, cities and other players depend on it. You must only use SoftLife where it's lawful for you to do so.
The rules for online games in India are changing. If a change in the law affects how SoftLife works there, we'll update these terms and tell you in the game.
Your account
You can start as a guest. A guest account lives on your device: if you clear your browser or lose the device, the guest account and its progress are gone. A full account is linked to a phone number (verified by a code we text you) or to Google, Apple or Facebook, and can be used on any device. Chatting, posting, buying and speaking in rooms need a full account.
- Give accurate information, including your date of birth. You can set your date of birth once; if it's wrong, contact support.
- Keep your sign-in methods secure. You're responsible for what happens on your account, and you must tell us at support@playsoftlife.com straight away if you think someone else is using it.
- Your game name must follow our community guidelines. It can't pretend to be SoftLife staff, a payment company or an official body, and you can change it once every 30 days.
- Your account is personal to you. You can't sell, rent, lend or give it away.
Play money and in-game items
Play money (shown as S₦, S₵, S-KSh, S-R, S$, S£, SC$ or S₹, depending on your market) and everything you get in the game, including houses, cars, clothes, businesses, emotes, decor, badges and the Pass, are part of the game. We give you a personal, limited, revocable licence to use them in SoftLife while your account is open. You don't own them, and:
- They have no cash value. You can't withdraw, cash out, sell or redeem them for money or anything of value, inside or outside SoftLife, and we will never buy them back.
- You can't transfer them to another player, except through features built for it: spraying money at a party (a host can receive at most twice what the party cost), crew savings circles (ajo), crew ventures, and buying from a player's business in the game. These follow the rules shown in the game: payments between players can be held for up to 72 hours, are taxed, are capped, can be reversed if the money behind them is charged back, and are never possible between linked accounts.
- Nothing in SoftLife is a bet. There are no paid random rewards and no stakes: cups are free to enter, and polls and duels never take play money.
- Prices, rewards, income and other game values can change. We balance the game's economy, and we may adjust it, including the value or availability of items, without that being a breach of these terms.
- Play money and items you got by mistake, through a bug, through a payment that was reversed, or by breaking these terms can be removed.
- When your account is closed, for any reason, its play money and items end with it.
Businesses you found are part of the game too. They aren't real businesses, they trade in play money only, and their customers include simulated ones. Founding costs (the licence and fit-out) are spent when you found, and the deposit is held in the business's own treasury. Rent and running costs come out of that treasury, never your own play money: if it can't pay its rent for a few days the business closes and what's left in its treasury is lost. You can take out profit above the deposit and what you put in, and when you close it yourself you get the rest after a closing fee and taxes. Moderators can hide, remove or close a business that breaks these terms or the community guidelines. Names, logos and text must be your own: brands' names are reserved for the brands.
Jobs at player businesses are game jobs too: the business pays its staff in play money from its treasury, never real money. SoftLife never charges anyone to apply for a job, and nobody may ask for payment to hire you: report a job post that does. Applications use the choices the game offers; there are no private messages between employers and applicants.
Buying play money and the Pass
You can buy play money packs and the SoftLife Pass with real money. Purchases are only for adults: we ask for your date of birth before your first purchase and block purchases by anyone under 18. Our purchases and refunds policy sets out prices, the Pass, spending limits, refunds and chargebacks, and is part of these terms. In short:
- Payments are taken by our payment partners (such as Paystack, Flutterwave and Stripe, or Apple and Google for in-app purchases). Their terms apply to the payment itself.
- Play money and the Pass are delivered as soon as the payment is confirmed. Because they're digital content supplied straight away, you lose any right to cancel once delivery starts, where the law allows that.
- The Pass lasts 30 days and does not renew by itself.
- There's no maximum on spending. You can set your own daily and monthly limits, or pause purchases, at any time.
- If a payment is reversed, refunded or charged back, we take back the play money or Pass it bought, even if that makes your balance negative. A negative balance locks your wallet until it's back above zero.
Free play money and rewards
We give out play money for free too: a welcome gift, daily pocket money, missions, quests, cups, and rewards for watching sponsored content. These rules apply:
- The welcome gift is one per person. We may hold it when a sign-up looks linked to other accounts, and release it when you verify a phone number that hasn't earned one before.
- Rewards, their amounts and how often you can earn them can change, and some features are limited each day.
- Rewards earned by cheating, automation or multiple accounts can be removed.
How you must behave
Follow our community guidelines everywhere in SoftLife. You must not:
- cheat, use bots, scripts, macros, auto-clickers or modified clients, or exploit bugs (tell us about bugs at support@playsoftlife.com instead);
- interfere with SoftLife, its systems or other players' accounts, or try to get access you haven't been given;
- create or use multiple accounts to farm gifts or rewards, or to get around a mute, suspension or ban;
- buy, sell or trade accounts, play money, items or services in the game for real money or anything outside the game, or offer to;
- ask other players for codes, PINs, passwords, card or bank details, or to send money outside the game;
- harass, threaten, scam or impersonate anyone, including SoftLife staff, or post illegal, hateful or sexual content;
- copy, scrape or reverse engineer SoftLife, except where the law allows it despite this term.
What you post
You can post things in SoftLife: your game name, bio, crew names and mottos, chat messages, guestbook notes, party titles, shout-outs, room titles and showcase entries. You keep any rights you have in them. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, show, reproduce and distribute them within SoftLife and its share links, for as long as they're in the game, so we can run the service.
You're responsible for what you post. Our filters block links, phone numbers and known scam phrases, and messages are limited to 280 characters. We may hide, remove or refuse anything that breaks these terms or the community guidelines, and we keep chat for 30 days (see our privacy policy).
Audio rooms
Audio rooms are live. We never record them, and you must not record, rebroadcast or transcribe a room without the agreement of everyone speaking in it. Speaking and hosting need a full account and an adult date of birth. Hosts can manage their room, and SoftLife moderators can join any room, including as a silent listener, to keep it safe. Every time staff join a room is logged.
Sponsored content and other sites
Brands can sponsor places, events and content in SoftLife. Sponsored content is always labelled "Sponsored". Some of it links to a brand's own site or app. Those are run by the brand, not by us, and their terms and privacy policies apply there. We never let gambling, betting, tobacco, vaping, crypto trading, loans, weapons or adult brands sponsor anything.
When rules are broken
To keep SoftLife fair and safe we can, depending on what happened: remove content; warn you; mute you in chat for a time or permanently; remove play money or items obtained by breaking these terms; suspend your account; or ban it. Crew officers can also mute members in their crew's chat for up to 7 days. We act in proportion to what happened, and we may act straight away when we need to protect other players or SoftLife.
If you think we got it wrong, write to support@playsoftlife.com within 30 days, with your game name. A different member of staff will review it and tell you the outcome. A ban for a serious breach, such as fraud or a threat to someone's safety, can end your account and its play money for good.
Changes to SoftLife
SoftLife is a live game. We add, change and remove features, cities, items, prices and rewards, and we may pause the service for maintenance. If we ever close SoftLife or stop offering it in your market, we'll tell you in the game at least 60 days before, and stop selling play money and the Pass when we announce it.
Our rights in SoftLife
SoftLife, including its software, art, writing, characters, music, logos and the SoftLife name, belongs to us or our licensors. Apart from the licence in these terms, we don't give you any rights in it. Our press kit explains how the media can use our logos.
What we promise, and what we don't
We'll provide SoftLife with reasonable care and skill. Beyond that, and except where the law doesn't let us exclude it, SoftLife is provided "as is": we don't promise it will always be available, error-free, or that any particular feature, city or item will stay.
Some of the game follows the real world: a city's weather, public holidays and football fixtures. This is for fun. It can be late or wrong, and you shouldn't rely on it for anything outside the game. Weather data comes from MET Norway (the Norwegian Meteorological Institute) under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence; match data comes from football-data.org and our own staff.
Our liability to you
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't let us limit or exclude, and nothing affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Subject to that, we aren't liable for losses that weren't a reasonably foreseeable result of our breaking these terms, for business losses, or for the loss of play money or items, which have no cash value. Our total liability to you for anything relating to SoftLife in any 12 months is limited to the amount you paid us in that period, or ₦10,000 (or its equivalent in your currency) if that's more.
Ending these terms
You can stop using SoftLife and delete your account at any time: on Me, under Your data, choose Delete my account. We finish deleting within 7 days; our privacy policy explains what we erase and what the law makes us keep. Deleting your account doesn't refund play money or the Pass.
We can close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, if the law requires us to, or if we stop offering SoftLife. Except in those cases, we'll give you at least 30 days' notice. The sections on play money, liability, governing law and anything else meant to continue survive the end of these terms.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when we change SoftLife or the law changes. We'll show the date of the latest version at the top. If a change materially affects you, we'll tell you in the game at least 14 days before it takes effect, unless it's needed sooner for legal or safety reasons. If you don't agree, you can delete your account before it takes effect; if you keep using SoftLife, you accept the new terms.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the courts of Lagos State have jurisdiction. If you live outside Nigeria, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws where you live, and you can bring a claim in your local courts where those laws allow it: for example, under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 in Nigeria, the Consumer Protection Act 2008 in South Africa, the Consumer Protection Act 2012 in Kenya, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 in the United Kingdom, your province's consumer protection law in Canada (in Ontario, the Consumer Protection Act 2002), and the Consumer Protection Act 2019 in India.
Before going to court, please contact us at legal@playsoftlife.com so we can try to resolve it. You can also contact the consumer protection authority where you live.
General
- These terms, with the documents they include, are the whole agreement between you and us about SoftLife.
- If a court finds part of these terms invalid, the rest still applies.
- If we don't enforce something straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- We may transfer these terms to another company if SoftLife is sold or reorganised; your rights won't be reduced. You can't transfer your rights under these terms.
- Nobody else has rights under these terms.
